CHP SYSTEM DESIGN MANAGER

The Search:

Renew Consultancy was appointed to identify a CHP System Design Manager to carry out a newly created role within the growing business.

This was a demanding role, based across two sites, and with a race against the clock ahead, the Client required a Leader with experience in the commercial CHP sector, who could make this opportunity their own from a blank canvas.

Key Candidate Attributes

  • Ensuring correct management of allocated CHP designs, projects, scoping, resource assessment, cost/benefit analysis, deliverables definition, progress monitoring, and financial control of budget and expenditure within project boundaries. 
  • Provide analytical and problem-solving expertise as allocated.
  • Lead the application, design, installation, and commissioning of CHP Systems.
  • Manage multiple customer Projects
  • Deliver plant room & energy center design.
  • Hold off-site meetings Nationwide inline with Project requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with building regulations and relevant British Standards.
  • Experience in using 3D CAD systems.
  • Electrical and hydraulic design knowledge. 
  • Degree qualified in a relevant electrical discipline. 


The Challenge

Finding an experienced CHP Design Manager with specific knowledge of Combined Heat and Power Systems, coupled with turnkey Project Management experience. 

The leader would require strong problem-solving acumen and must be happy traveling long distances to meet the needs of the growing company. They would need to wear multiple hats across the Design and Project aspects of the position and thrive in a growing company.

We were tasked with mapping the market for an individual who could use their initiative and mature approach to work, resolve problems, be attentive to detail, and be able to lead by example. They would require the ability to positively influence cross-functional teams in a challenging environment.

Renew Consultancy responded by appointing our expert research team to market, map, and identify Design Engineers, Applications Engineers, and Project Engineers across the agreed geographical location with specific experience executing complex projects and using 3D CAD for the design of electrical and hydraulic systems within the Combined Heat and Power Industry. 

We created a list of target companies and projects and brought together a targeted list of potential candidates for the client.

Identifying the candidate

Renew Consultancy’s rigorous search methodology identified a total of 47 potential candidates across the Combined Heat and Power industry. Our tried and tested screening process resulted in a shortlist of 5 candidates. Together, we agreed on 3 candidates, and they proceeded to interview.

The successful candidate owns the ability to talk technically with designers and consultants in order to win bid projects. They have delivered electrical and mechanical design on turn-key projects for energy schemes, working with consultants and M&E design and build contractors.

They own a combination of design and project experience gained within the CHP sector using AUTOCAD for 3D modeling of mechanical and electrical components, including hydraulic systems design. Qualified at BENg Hons level, they produce calculations and data for the design scope to meet specific customer needs.

The CHP Design Manager has delivered technically complex, high-value projects, liaising with customers throughout the project life cycle to ensure project completion and customer satisfaction, including conveying technical information, documentation and reporting.

The incumbent has the responsibility for the full project lifecycle from application and design to installation and commissioning.
